A neglected backyard corner in St. George, a few loose rocks and old figurines, turned into a stacked sandstone boulder waterfall fountain on the existing circular paver pad, with a buried pump basin, black river rock fill, and low-voltage landscape lighting. The corner now anchors the whole yard.

The backyard itself was well-kept: green lawn, mature trees, a tidy patio. But the far corner had never been finished. A handful of sandstone rocks sat loosely against the block wall with a couple of concrete figurines tucked in. The space was not ugly, but it was not anything either.
The homeowner had always imagined a water feature there. An existing paver pad and curved border were already in place, started years earlier and never finished. The goal was a natural stacked stone waterfall that felt like it belonged: not a kit fountain, not a plastic basin.

You cannot stack the boulders and then figure out where the water goes. The flow path has to be designed before the first stone goes down, with each tier directing water inward and downward rather than sideways. Getting this wrong means the fountain looks great but runs dry in the middle, with water sheeting off the side instead of cascading through the center.
The base matters as much as the stone. A fountain that shifts, settles unevenly, or leaks almost always traces back to the base, so the basin was properly buried, the pad leveled and reinforced, and the surrounding ground graded to drain away.

Water cascades through three tiers of stacked sandstone, recirculates through the hidden pump, and runs quietly enough to hear from the patio without drowning out conversation.
The finished fountain looks like it was always meant to be there, anchors the far corner of the yard, and works as a feature at night thanks to the lighting.
Worth knowing
Pre-made fountain kits look like what they are: a product. Real sandstone looks like it belongs in the yard and holds up better in Southern Utah's UV, since there is no plastic basin to crack or fade.

Not much. The pump runs on a standard outdoor outlet and can be put on a timer. You top off the water occasionally, especially in St. George's heat, clean the pump filter a couple of times a year, and rinse the stones down in spring.
Yes. St. George rarely gets hard freezes, and when it does the pump can simply be turned off for a night or two. The stone handles temperature swings well, and most homeowners run their fountains ten or eleven months of the year without issues.
That is exactly what happened here. The existing paver pad and curved border were already in place, and the fountain was built on top of what was there. If you have existing hardscape you want to incorporate, Viking designs around it.
